SHAPING TOM MOREY, A LIFE STORY
Feature - BioPic SPEC SCRIPT
Based on the audio biography "Shaping Tom Morey"
This is the story of inventor, surfer and futurist Tom Morey, as he struggles with his insatiable impulse to revolutionize the surfing world, while trying to find his universal purpose in life.
The story begins with Tom attending a present-day Surf Invitational in his honor, Morey Boogie Boards plentiful on the beach. After a whimsical interaction with a fan, we’re transported back to Ventura, CA 1943, where Tom and his family relocate. Thanks to encouragement from his Dad he discovers his love of rhythm and motion, especially his prowess for surfing and drums.

Back to the present, and Tom continues to interact with fans, especially with a group of dudes rapping an ad lib song to Tom. Tom reciprocates with improvising a rap song back, while playing his ukulele.

Back to 1956, Tom’s addictive impulse to invent accelerates, as he begins to experiment with various surfboard designs. He attends USC, and attempts to outwit Hobie Alter by developing a paper surfboard, which fails, but leads to a successful paper hat invention. He meets his first wife, surfs an ocean wave and begins to shape boards out of the house.

Back to present, he encounters an old surf friend, Corky Carroll. They reminisce about the old days, Tom laughably rants about the current state of surfboards.
Back to 1964, Tom’s surfboard business, and boredom at Douglas Aircraft begin to strain the marriage. He abruptly quits Douglas Aircraft and opens a surf shop. After several lighthearted encounters with would-be surfers, Tom partners up with an old USC friend to create Morey-Pope Surfboards. Tom creates the first nose riding competition, but the changing surf industry leads to a stressful partnership. Luckily, Tom gets a gig in Hawaii for an International Paper commercial constructing and surfing a paper surfboard. While there, he buys a house on Kauai and is introduced to island life.
He leaves his business behind, moves to Kauai, and meets his second wife, and true love. They move to the big island. It’s here that a fortuitous series of events leads to the invention of the Morey Boogie Board.
He moves back stateside and perfects the design, only to eventually sell the business, sign a never-compete clause, and resign the Morey trademark name, his only lifelong regret.
Back to present, Tom, Marchia and a few close friends sit on the beach. Tom expresses gratitude for being part of the surfing world, and sings his Boogie Song. The story ends with various archive footage supporting several title screens.
